Captain Larry L. Fowler
Florida Saltwater Fishing.
Fishing Report for Mosquito Lagoon.
As 1999 begins the fishing in Mosquito Lagoon and surrounding areas
continues to improve. The water levels continue to rise and are slightly
higher than normal. This allows us to get further up on the flats and we
are seeing more redfish tailing and feeding up in these newly flooded
areas. We are even seeing a few small schools of 25 to 50 redfish in the
6 to 10 pound range.
Also with the water temperature staying in the
upper sixties there are quite a few big Trout up in these areas as well.
Today we caught three Trout to 6.5lbs. We also caught seven Redfish to
12lbs. Although we had to blind cast these areas because of some
blustery winds causing semi-dirty water conditions there were plenty of
redfish moving around.
A good sign that things are getting better also
came this past Saturday with 25 knot winds howling out of the northeast
I was poling in 2 to 3 foot of water leading into one of these newly
flooded flats with clients Ted Hopkins and friend Maurice from
Jacksonville and on our second cast Maurice hooked up with a true Trophy
Redfish with 6# test line and battled it for about 30 minutes. When we
landed it we were all astonished to find it was 48 inches long and
weighed 35 lbs. Quite a catch. Even the big reds seem to be feeding
towards these flats as they continue flood over.
So as we leave 1998 and
all the bad weather that came with it, 1999 looks real good and I am
looking forward to the usual great redfishing we have in the winter and
early spring.
