1999 continues to be an awesome year for Redfishing in Mosquito
Lagoon. We have
not had a trip with less than double digit numbers of Redfish so far on
21 charters
through the month of February. Mother nature continues to give us very
warm
temperatures both in the water and during the day allowing for great
fishing. The water
temperature is 73 degrees in the lagoon and surrounding flats, more like
April and the
fish are aggressive and plentiful.
Today with clients Ray Choff and brother Frank from Michigan we had
13 redfish , 1
black drum at 12 #, 2 seatrout, and 1 small flounder. We were sight
casting to large sandy
potholes in the grass flats with ultralight spinning gear (6# test). A
very good halfday trip.
The day before with one of my regular clients John McClain of Orlando
we had 15 reds
to 12# and we visually sighted, casted and hooked 8 of those within 3 to
5 feet of the boat
as I poled along the flats. This is top of the line in flats fishing
when you see the fish in
18 inches of water and make a short cast beyond the redfish and slowly
twitch the lure
and then see the Redfish turn and go for the lure, watch him eat it, and
then set the hook .
It doesnt get any better than that. What a thrill to visually see the
whole process from less
than 5 feet away in very shallow water and sometimes directly over the
Redfish. Wow!
Well I dont know if it can get any better, but this Year is fast
becoming one of the best
Redfishing winters in a long time and with Spring fast on its way it
will be nothing short
of spectacular. CANT WAIT. Its fun to be the guide when you can put all your
clients on this
many fish. Thank you mother nature.
